Your Path to a German Driver’s License – § 31 Conversion

Requirements – What You Need to Know

You already have a driver’s license from another country? Great – that’s a solid starting point! But if you’re planning to stay in Germany longer,
depending on your country of origin, you’ll need to convert your license to a German one.
This process is regulated by
§ 31 of the German Driver’s License Ordinance (FeV).

You must convert your license if:

  • You’re from a non-EU or non-EEA country
  • You’ve established residency in Germany
  • Your foreign license is not valid indefinitely in Germany

Don’t worry – we’ll help you through every step of the process!

Step-by-Step – How the Conversion Works

1. Consultation & Document Check

Visit us and bring your foreign driver’s license. We’ll check where it was issued, how long it’s valid, and whether you’ll need to take a theory or practical exam. You’ll receive a clear and honest assessment of your next steps.

2. Application at the Licensing Authority

You’ll need to submit an official application for conversion at your local driver’s license office. You’ll need:

  • Your valid foreign license
  • certified translation (e.g., from the ADAC or a sworn translator)
  • Eye test certificate
  • Biometric passport photo
  • First Aid course certificate (if required)
No worries – we’ll tell you exactly what to bring!

3. Training with Us (if exams are required)

Not all drivers need to attend driving school – but if you do, we’ve got you covered:

  • We’ll prepare you thoroughly for the theory exam
  • We’ll get you ready for the practical driving test
  • You’ll only take as many driving lessons as you really need

4. Take Your Exams

You’ll take your exams at TÜV. Once you pass – congratulations – you’ll receive your German driver’s license!

Important Info

Drivers from certain countries (e.g., Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia) often don’t need to take any exams.
We’ll check this for you!

Usually, for 6 months after registering your residence in Germany, you can drive with your foreign license.
After that, you’re no longer allowed to drive without a German license.

You can also start the conversion process long after the 6 months have passed.
But remember that you’re
not allowed to drive in Germany until the conversion is complete.
